The Kupilka 37 Cup is a return to simplicity, where one cup is enough. Its generous capacity makes it a so-called 2-in-1 cup, from which you can enjoy both food and drink by the campfire. The cup is complemented, for example, by the Kupilka Spork 205 utensil.
Kupilka 37 works every time, for both food and beverages
This internationally awarded outdoor cup was tested by Kai Lehtonen during the early frosts of last autumn:
Testing Kupilka 37 Outdoors Cup
Hiking and camping do not have to be a dull toil through dense forests. With small touches you can turn your hike into an unforgettable oasis moment. One of the best ways to elevate your hiking experience is to take a break by the fire, sipping your favorite hot drink. Memories of life’s best moments are encapsulated in your kuksa or camping cup. But can the traditional kuksa be improved?
The Finnish Kupilka 37 outdoor cup is a modern development of the ancient kuksa. Instead of wood, it is made from a natural fibre composite. The handle is a stem-like instead of the traditional hole handle. The cup can also be washed in a dishwasher. We tested how the Kupilka performs and whether it can be trusted as a reliable tool for outdoorsmen.
Wood is a traditional and esteemed ecological material for kuksa cups. However, with use, wood absorbs flavors and is not recommended to be washed with dish soap. Wood is also prone to becoming brittle. On the other hand, metal outdoor cups are generally durable, and some can even be used to heat drinks. However, metal feels cold in winter weather, and the ergonomics of thin metal handles are usually not the best.
The Kupilka made from a natural fibre composite is pleasant to use, the material did not feel cold against bare skin even in the almost winter-like conditions of late autumn, and the mouthfeel is excellent. The handle’s design is also quite successful, making it easy to manage a fully loaded cup.
Due to its high sides and relatively large capacity of just under 400 ml, the cup can also be used for eating. On top of that, on longer trips it can serve as a water scoop when replenishing water supplies. Always remember to purify natural water before drinking it, if you are unsure of its cleanliness.
During testing, no off-flavors were detected when enjoying a drink or food from the cup. Additionally, cleaning is very easy due to the hard-surfaced material, good ergonomic design, and bowl-like structure. The cup can be cleaned in the field simply by rinsing with water and wiping with a paper towel. Kupilka also performed excellently in the dishwasher without any side effects.
There is a hole in the handle for attaching a mug. The hole is the right size for a nail driven into the wall, but unfortunately, it is slightly too small to properly fit a medium-sized carabiner. For the development version, I recommend making the hole slightly larger to improve the attachment options for the cup.
The Kupilka 37 cup is an excellent choice for an outdoor cup. In addition to its classic design, it is easy to maintain and performs its primary function exceptionally well. The ability to use the cup as a small food bowl and water scoop makes it a versatile all-rounder. If price is not an obstacle, you get a timeless camping companion for shared moments when nature calls.
