MOOSE - The crowned creature of Finnish Forests
The moose, that majestic, crowned creature, is the largest animal in Finland’s forests. In ancient Finland, it was an important source of food and shelter. According to old belief, the bull moose, which grows its antlers in spring, lifts the sun back into the sky after the long winter.
The moose often symbolizes self-esteem and independence, determination, hard work, and endurance, as well as renewal and the cycle of the year.
In the poems of the Kalevala, the moose holds almost as much significance as the bear, and both represent the coexistence of humans and nature. The Mistress of Pohjola promises her daughter to Ilmarinen if he brings her the Hiisi Moose. To everyone’s surprise, Ilmarinen succeeds in his task.
And the head was made of punk-wood,
Horns of naked willow branches,
Feet were furnished by the rushes,
And the legs, by reeds aquatic,
Veins were made of withered grasses,
Eyes, from daisies of the meadows,
Ears were formed of water-flowers,
And the skin of tawny fir-bark,
Out of sappy wood, the muscles,
Fair and fleet, the magic reindeer.
