KALEVALA - OUR STORY
Kalevala is the national epic of the Finns and Karelians, telling the story of the birth of the world, people, nature, and mythical heroes. Published in 1894, the epic poem has its roots in folk poetry and songs collected by Elias Lönnrot during his poem-gathering journeys, which he unified into a coherent narrative.
In 2026, the Finnish feature film Kalevala: The Story of Kullervo will premiere, bringing familiar characters from Kalevala to the big screen and transporting viewers to 11th-century Eastern Finland. The film is based on Kalevala but stands as an independent work, centered on the Kalevala world: myths, people, and the relationship with nature. Directed by Antti J. Jokinen, the film stars leading Finnish actors, including Elias Salonen, Eero Aho, and Krista Kosonen. It was filmed mainly in Nurmes, near Kupilka’s home region in North Karelia.
